Students and adult helpers engaged in hands-on science activities.

Each month, we will be highlighting a partner here in the region that offers ongoing STEM activities for kids. This month, we turn the spotlight on NewBoCo, in Cedar Rapids. In addition to supporting districts in providing in-school opportunities for computer science, NewBoCo is also proud to provide out-of-school programs for students.

This school year, NewBoCo will again be offering free CoderDojo events and Girls Who Code clubs. These programs help students "see themselves" in STEM—and allow the adults in their lives to learn more and provide encouragement. NewBoCo hosts about 450 unique students each year through CoderDojo events where they can engage with open-ended STEM stations, including coding, circuits, and engineering structures. Girls Who Code clubs provide a place for 3rd–12th grade students to learn coding and related skills with supportive peers and use computer science to change the world. In both programs, students get to work with mentors and engage in activities that they may not have access to elsewhere.

Students and their adults can join future CoderDojo events as they can throughout the year or register for the spring Girls Who Code session when registration opens this fall. Learn more about the NewBoCo offerings here.
